The Hon Justine Elliot MP, Acting Minister for Health in the Rudd Government today announced a $4.3 million funding commitment to construct Gunnedah's innovative Rural Health Centre.
Commenting on the announcement, Gunnedah's Mayor, Councillor Adam Marshall said it was wonderful news for a project that had captured the imagination of the local community as an innovative and practical solution to encouraging and maintaining medical and allied health professionals and facilities in rural and regional areas.
"For a number of years the Gunnedah community has been working hard fund raising and lobbying for the Gunnedah Rural Health Centre", he said.
"We believe the medical centre model is feasible and this funding is evidence that the Rudd Government also is very supportive."
The Gunnedah Rural Health Centre will provide all the medical and allied health requirements to the community from a 'GP Super Clinic' in the Gunnedah hospital grounds, as well as providing training for medical students from the University of New England and University of NSW.
"We now look forward to the building commencement and the further enhancement of Gunnedah's health services", Councillor Marshall concluded.
