Ethanol bio-refinery project refocuses on food

Tuesday, 2 February 2010

Gunnedah's long awaited Ethanol Plant project has made a solid move forward but in a different, decisive direction. The announcement was made today, by Primary Food Company CEO Matthew Kelley, that ethanol would now become a by-product from a $150M cereal processing plant to be constructed in Gunnedah.

About 200,000 tonnes of wheat will be processed annually to produce cereal-type products (about 70% of the output) with industrial grade alcohol (ethanol) coming from the waste stream (30%).

Up to 350 workers are expected to be on site during the 18 month construction phase with 40 - 50 full time employees required to operate the facility.

Commenting on the development, Gunnedah Shire Mayor, Councillor Adam Marshall said this was an exciting day for Gunnedah as the project will provide another important economic base upon which Gunnedah can grow and prosper.

"Council has been pushing to diversify the local economy away from reliance on agriculture and mining and we are determined in helping Primary Food Company bring this to fruition," he said.

Mr Kelley, in describing the plant, said he believed the facility's demand for natural gas would guarantee the 'load' needed for construction of a natural gas pipeline to Gunnedah.

"The project has been a long and difficult process and I thank Council for its unwavering support," he concluded.
