What do I need to be a
volunteer with Gunnedah SES?
Our volunteers come from all walks of life and a variety
of ages. You will need to be at least eighteen, and
be able to dedicate Tuesday or Wednesday night between
7pm and 10.pm for ongoing training.
Are all roles in SES physically demanding?
There are plenty of roles in the SES, such as Operations
Centre work, which require planning and organisational
skills instead of physical activity. However, you will
need to be able to complete the basic skills in our
introductory course - this includes things such as tying
knots and using radios.
Is volunteering with
the SES dangerous?
All SES volunteers must be appropriately trained in
any skill that they might use when responding to an
emergency. All members are issued with full protective
equipment and more senior volunteers always accompany
inexperienced members on training nights.
All SES volunteers are required to hold a first aid
certificate, Training and Certification is available
to members. SES volunteers are fully insured for any
personal injury they may incur whilst training or involved
in an official SES operation, provided they are following
SES approved procedures and are wearing approved clothing
and footwear.
SES operations are conducted according to standard
operating procedures that reflect international best
practice for safety.
How much time do I have
to give to SES?
Once you have completed your introductory course, the
amount of time you choose to dedicate to the SES depends
on your level of interest and available time. It is
important to attend the Tuesday or Wednesday night training
sessions on a regular basis.
