Gunnedah
is home to one of the largest and healthiest colonies
of koalas in Australia. A publication called "Koalas
& land use in Gunnedah Shire" was produced by the National
Parks & Wildlife Service in 1992 and was supported by
the Department of Conservation and Land Management,
Australia - Save the Bush and the local community.
This
unique report centred around koala management, tree
preservation and land degradation. The report was also
known as the "bearcare" study, reports that the koala
population in the Gunnedah area has risen dramatically
in the period 1970-1990. This is largely due to the
creation and expansion of tree corridors which allow
the koalas access into the town area.
Koalas
are a great tourist attraction for Gunnedah and promote
the healthy life for the people and wildlife living
within it.
Koalas
are now often seen right in the heart of the township
in Gunnedah and the Visitor Information Centre in Anzac
Park has even had its own resident presiding in a tree
right out the front of the Centre.
To
see a real life koala in Gunnedah, simply call in to
the Visitor Information Centre to find out where you
can spot one. You can even call into the Waterways
Wildlife Park located on the Mullaley Rd just a
few kilometres out of town heading towards Coonabarabran.
